For all Scuba Divers?

La Mexicana… ;) asked:

Hello! First of all sorry for putting this in the wrong section. The thing is that there really isn’t a section for scuba diving or underwater sports. anyway…

I’m planning on learning how to scuba dive. Everytime I go to aquariums I think that if THEY are magnificent than diving must be even better. But i would like to hear the opinions of divers.

Where did you learn how to dive? What creatures have you seen? tell me of your experiences :)

Thanks for any answers :)

  1. I learned in Hawaii while in the military. Have gone diving in Hawaii, speechless. Truk lagoon, awesome but sad. St. Lucia and Jamaica, and the Philippines. In Hawaii when I wanted to relax, I would go down to about 30 – 40 feet and just sit on the sand to feed the fish. It was like a living rainbow swirling all around me.

  2. I can tell you about diving, and about diving in an aquarium.

I got certified several years ago (my wife’s been certified for years). Went ahead and did Advanced Open Water. It has opened up a wonderful world to us – exotic places to see that many people never experience, interesting people to share stories with. Oh, and that physics and math we didn’t think we’d ever use – comes in handy.
The amazing beauty of undersea life, and the challenge of diving itself, are exhilarating. I know it sounds a little corny, but learning breath control and staying calm and focused under water is like meditation; close to a mystical experience at times.

Being a volunteer diver at an aquarium is a lot of fun. In the open ocean, the fish mostly try to get away from divers (even the sharks run). In the aquarium, it’s like being in a pile of puppies – the fish know we’re there to feed them. It’s also lots of fun interacting with the guests through the glass, and learning about the fish and animals that we have in the exhibits.

Diving also encourages people to learn about the underwater world and for those really serious about it, to become conservation minded. Quite simply, if the reefs die then there won’t be anyplace cool to dive.
